Premack Principle for Effective Dog Training

Only give access to highly preferred rewards after dog completes a less preferred task first.

Principle Basics

Determine your dog's favorite treats, toys, or activities to use as reinforcement.

 Find Motivators

Target simple obedience behaviors to link to motivators, like sit, down, stay, and come.

Choose Behaviors

First cue the behavior, then immediately give access to the preferred reward after it's completed.

Reward Sequence

Use different motivators so your dog stays engaged and interested in training.

Vary Rewards

Gradually expect more from your dog before delivering the reward.

Raise Criteria

If your dog loses interest, re-evaluate your motivators and make sure they are truly high-value to your dog.
