An active family may do better with higher energy dog breeds that need lots of exercise.

Consider if a large or giant breed dog will fit your available space comfortably.

Long-haired dogs require much more grooming. Short-haired dogs are lower maintenance.  

Look for breeds known for being gentle, eager to please, and good with kids.

Are you able to commit to providing consistent training, socialization, and reinforcing obedient behavior?  

Choose a breed that meshes well with resident pets' personalities and activity levels.

If allergies are a concern, consider hypoallergenic dog breeds.
